The National Archaeological Museum of Chieti is housed in Villa Frigerij, a neoclassical building from 1830. Its rooms display grave goods, weapons and pottery (from pre-Roman necropolises of the 9th-4th century BC) and sculptures dating from between the 6th and 5th century BC. Of particular interest are the relief of the “Warrior of Capestrano” and the numismatic collection (with around 15,000 coins) and the Pansa collection (with small bronzes, jewellery, ivories and glass linked to daily life).
The La Civitella museum displays clay and bronze finds, coins, remains of statues and architectural friezes relating to the republican phase of the city of Chieti: other sections display finds relating to the Roman city, with the portraits of Augustus and Titus and various fragments of inscriptions and marble statues, while bronze and iron weapons date instead to the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods.
