Sword and scabbard from tomb 53, Oleggio (NO)

Replica of a 2nd century BC Celtic sword of the so-called “Rigana” type

Double-edged blade, rather thin and of elliptical cross-section, tapering towards the point; grip of rectangular cross-section, decorated on the original with a sequence of incised notches and with a curved upper end. On the replica I did not reproduce these incisions, and the upper end was not curved but peened over. Overall length 96 cm, maximum blade width 4.5 cm, in forged and hardened steel. Handle in sessile oak and Italian walnut, its shape inspired by some reliefs on Etruscan sarcophagi.

Two-plate iron scabbard with a bell-shaped mouth and a suspension loop with circular upper and lower attachments, fixed by rivets at the centre, and a quadrangular strap passage. For the reconstruction of the scabbard, and in particular of the chape, the scabbard from tomb 48 of the Mirandola necropolis, Santa Maria di Zevio (VR), was taken as a reference, as it is far more intact and therefore richer in detail.
